Climbing My Mountain: From Doubt to Discovery

Growth • February 14, 2024

Life wasn’t easy. Dropping out of school at 16 as a new mom felt like being lost in a thick fog. Every day was a blur of diapers, bills, and just trying to keep a roof over our heads. But deep down, a tiny spark flickered. It wasn’t a huge fire, but a quiet hope for something better, a life where I could do more than just survive.

College was my first step out of the fog. It opened a door to a whole new world beyond our tiny apartment. Learning wasn’t just boring textbooks anymore! There were exciting conferences, helpful workshops, and endless ways to grow as a person. It felt like a flower pushing through concrete, each new discovery making me feel stronger and more hopeful.

The doubts haven’t completely disappeared, they still whisper sometimes. But now, a bigger fire burns inside me. I know I can achieve more, even when things seem tough. Where did this fire come from? What did it lead me to?

Facing the Doubts:

My husband sometimes questions all the self-improvement stuff I do. “Another conference? Really?” he asks, kind of teasing. It makes me doubt myself for a second, but then I remember the amazing stress-busting technique I learned at the last one. “These conferences give me energy and connect me with cool people,” I tell him. “Plus, you never know what you might learn!”

Taking him to a Tony Robbins event wasn’t quite the shared experience I hoped for. But it showed me something important: everyone’s journey is different. Even though he didn’t love it, it made me want to find my own “tribe” of people who get my love of learning. An online group called Growth Day became my lifeline, reminding me I wasn’t alone in wanting to grow.

My Compass for Climbing My Mountain:

Here are some things that help me keep going when doubt whispers and negativity tries to pull me back:

1. Find Your Tribe: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your dreams. Look for online groups, workshops, or local clubs focused on self-discovery. These people become your cheerleaders, reminding you they’re there for you every step of the way.

2. Remember Your “Why”: Doubt can be annoying, but don’t let it take the wheel. My “why” started when my son was born. Growing up in a tough situation, I wanted a different life for him. College, following his dreams, a happy life – that became my guiding star. It fueled every choice I made, even when doubt whispered in my ear. I worked hard, learned new things, and never gave up. It wasn’t always easy. Fear tried to stop me, and doubt tried to dim my light. But remembering my “why,” that vision of my son’s future, kept me going.

Take a moment to reconnect with your “why.” What makes you passionate? What dreams are you chasing? Write it down, picture it, share it with a friend. Let your “why” be your guiding star, showing you the way and reminding you that you’re not alone.

3. Enjoy the Journey: Becoming your best self is a lifelong adventure, not a race. I used to be so focused on the finish line that I missed all the cool stuff along the way. I missed bedtime stories with my kids because I was always busy. Now, I enjoy the journey, celebrating every small win. Did I conquer my fear of public speaking? Learn a new skill? Have a good laugh with my family? I take time to appreciate my progress and savor the experience. Recently, I started writing my goals on sticky notes and sticking them on bottles of champagne! Popping a bottle to celebrate a small win reminds me that the journey itself is worth enjoying. It’s never too late to change your mind and appreciate the present moment. Take a deep breath, enjoy the twists and turns, and remember, every step forward is a victory on your journey of self-discovery.

4. Be Kind to Yourself: I used to be my own worst critic. Now, I treat myself with kindness, like I would a friend. I forgive my mistakes, celebrate small wins, and encourage myself instead of doubting myself. It’s still a work in progress, but my journey feels lighter and brighter because of it.

5. Share Your Truth: Don’t keep your story silent, it can inspire others! Share your experiences, the conferences that helped you grow, the books that changed your mind, the people who motivate you. Your truth connects with others and builds a community where being yourself is celebrated.

Remember: Your journey is yours alone. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone but yourself. So, hold your head high, see doubt as a chance to grow, and keep walking your path with confidence. You’ve got this!

Now, let’s shine a light on those who inspire me:

Ready to Take the First Step?

Maybe you’re reading this thinking, “This is all great, but where do I even start?” Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Think about your “why.” What is your reason for wanting to grow? Write it down and keep it somewhere you’ll see it every day.
  • Find one small thing you can do today to move forward. Maybe it’s reading an article about self-discovery, listening to a podcast, or joining an online group.
  • Be kind to yourself! Change takes time. Celebrate your small wins and forgive yourself for setbacks.

You are capable of amazing things. Believe in yourself, take that first step, and keep climbing your mountain!
